A Heartwarming Cultural Exchange at Joenji Temple

On July 21, we joined an international exchange event by Hannari Wagashi Labo at the peaceful Joenji Temple. Welcomed by kind volunteers, we felt instantly at home.

The day began with a small bazaar of traditional Japanese items, followed by a hands-on wagashi-making session where we created nerikiri shaped like hanabi (fireworks) and the charming Shimaenaga bird. As someone who loves summer fireworks, crafting my own was a joyful experience.

A student from Kaetsu Ariake Junior and Senior High School also joined us, making the cultural exchange even more meaningful.

Lunch by “obentokana” was prepared with local ingredients and thoughtful touches, including a prayer space for Muslim participants—making the event truly inclusive.

In the afternoon, we experienced calligraphy and sutra copying, a meditative moment that helped us reconnect with ourselves.

I’m deeply grateful for this experience. It reminded me of the beauty of Japanese culture and the kindness of the people who share it so generously.
